There are many reasons to write well. Certainly, a good writer achieves higher scores on tests and higher grades on papers. But I’d like you to consider this topic from another angle. I’d like to suggest that there is something finer: that a good writer is a good thinker. When we write well, we use a variety of quality words. And when we use quality words, we think about things with more complexity, nuance and clarity. Good writers find that their writing provides a real source of pleasure because they feel their power and confidence grow with each effort to express their ideas in multifaceted ways. Good writers find themselves demanding more of their imagination. Good writers make better and more interesting thinkers. Think about it: what distinguishes us humans from other animals is our ability to think; therefore, demand the best of yourself. Learn to write beautifully.
